Insurance in Kitale
Trans Nzoia is a farming economy with a trading town at its centre, and the insurance here follows the harvest. The exposures are seasonal, the payroll moves, and the policies that were right in a dry year are often wrong in a good one.

What Kitale asks for
Different town, different questions. These are the four that come up in this office.
Seasonal payroll
A Trans Nzoia farm may run twelve permanent staff and eighty at harvest. WIBA is priced on declared payroll, and the declaration that was accurate in February is not accurate in August. Undeclared seasonal staff are the single most common gap we find here โ and the one that surfaces at the worst possible moment.
Farm property and machinery
Stores, driers, silos, workshops, tractors and implements. Rural property carries a different fire and theft exposure from a town shop, and machinery breakdown is a separate cover from property damage. A tractor that fails in the planting window is a bigger loss than its repair bill.
Produce in transit
Grain, seed, fertiliser and produce moving by road, whether to a mill in Eldoret or across the border towards Suam. Goods in transit cover is inexpensive relative to the load, and it is the cover most often left out of a farm's insurance programme.
The town's trade
Kitale's town centre is a trading centre: shops, hardware, agrovets, distributors and transporters. Stock, cash, glass and a WIBA obligation for staff. A commercial package handles most of it in one policy with one renewal date.

A worked farm example
Not a quotation, and not a template โ but it shows how the pieces fit together for a mixed farm of roughly 60 hectares with a permanent staff of 14 and a harvest crew of 70.
| Cover | Because |
|---|---|
| Property | Stores, driers and workshops are the assets a fire would take first |
| Machinery | Breakdown during planting or harvest costs more than the repair |
| Goods in transit | Produce and inputs are most exposed while they are on a lorry |
| WIBA | Seventy seasonal workers create a liability that a twelve-person declaration does not cover |
| Motor | Farm vehicles on public roads need third-party cover, compulsory like any other |
| Public liability | Visitors, contractors and machinery working near a road |
What we would ask
- How many people work here at peak, not on average
- What the stores and driers would cost to rebuild today
- What machinery is owned, and what is hired in
- What moves off the farm, by what route, and how often
- Whether there is a processing operation on site, which changes the risk class
- What has already happened โ fires, breakdowns, injuries, near misses
Crop and livestock cover depends on the underwriter, the season and the location. Ask early. It is not a product that can be arranged after the loss, and it is not available everywhere.
