How to renew car insurance in Kenya

Motor cover in Kenya runs for a fixed period, usually twelve months, and it does not renew itself. Start about a month before the end date: that is enough time to check the sum insured, protect your no-claim discount, and compare the renewal figure before the old policy runs out.

When to start

A month before the end date is the practical answer. It leaves room for the insurer to issue the renewal, for you to check the sum insured against what the vehicle is now worth, and for a comparison to be run properly rather than in a hurry on the last day.

Starting earlier than that is rarely useful, because renewal terms are usually set close to the date. Starting later is how gaps happen.

What a lapse actually costs

There is no statutory grace period that allows you to keep driving on an expired motor policy. Once the end date passes, the vehicle is uninsured, and driving it is an offence.

The financial exposure is the part people underestimate. A claim that happens in the gap is not a claim at all: damage you cause to another vehicle, and injury to another person, becomes yours to settle personally. On a comprehensive policy you also lose the cover on your own vehicle at exactly the moment it is least convenient.

Some underwriters will agree to backdate cover where a renewal is completed promptly after expiry. That is a commercial decision, not a right, and it is not something to plan around.

The no-claim discount

A no-claim discount is the reduction earned for each claim-free year. It is the single largest lever most motorists have on their renewal figure, and it is portable: it belongs to your claims record, not to the insurer.

How the discount behaves
SituationEffect on the discount
A claim-free yearThe discount steps up at renewal
A claim you makeIt is reduced or reset, depending on the insurer's scale
Changing insurerUsually carried across, evidenced by a certificate of experience
Letting cover lapseThe record is interrupted, and the discount can be lost

This is why small claims are worth thinking about before they are reported. Settling a minor knock yourself can cost less over several renewals than the discount it removes.

Changing insurer at renewal

Renewal is the natural point to move, and nothing obliges you to stay. The mechanics are simple but the order matters.

  1. Ask the outgoing insurer for a certificate of experience showing the claim-free period.
  2. Get the new quote priced on that record, not as a first-time risk.
  3. Make sure the new cover starts on the day the old one ends, not after it.
  4. Do not cancel the old policy before the new one is confirmed in force.

Moving mid-term is a different question. It is possible, but refunds are pro-rata and subject to the policy's cancellation terms, so the arithmetic rarely favours it.

What moves the renewal figure

The renewal premium is not last year's number plus a percentage. It is re-rated, and the inputs move.

  • Sum insured. Vehicles depreciate. Insuring last year's value means paying premium on value that no longer exists.
  • Excess. A higher excess lowers the premium and raises what you pay at the point of claim.
  • Claims history. Through the no-claim discount, and through the insurer's own experience rating.
  • Class of use. Private, commercial and PSV are priced differently, and the class must match how the vehicle is actually used.
  • Security. A fitted tracking device is usually recognised in the rating.
  • Levies and stamp duty. Added on top of the premium and not negotiable.

Questions we are asked

How early can I renew car insurance in Kenya?

Most insurers will quote and issue a renewal before the current policy ends, commonly from about a month out. Renewing early means the new cover starts the moment the old one stops, with no gap in between.

Is there a grace period after car insurance expires in Kenya?

There is no statutory grace period that lets you keep driving on an expired motor policy. Some underwriters will agree to backdate cover where a renewal is completed promptly, but that is a commercial decision by the insurer, not a right, and it is not something to rely on.

What happens to my no-claim discount if I change insurers?

A no-claim discount is earned on your own claims record, not on loyalty to one insurer. It can usually be carried to a new insurer if you can evidence the claim-free period, which is why the certificate of experience matters at renewal.

Can I renew with a different insurance company?

Yes. At renewal you are free to move. The practical requirements are a certificate of experience from the outgoing insurer and a new proposal, and the new cover should start on the day the old one ends rather than after it.

Does my insurance transfer if I sell the car?

Cover does not pass to the buyer with the vehicle. A policy can often be transferred to a replacement vehicle, or the remaining period adjusted, but only with the insurer's agreement and on their terms.

What do I need in order to renew?

The current certificate or policy number, the registration, the vehicle's current insured value, and a decision on the excess. Where the vehicle is financed, the financier's interest has to be noted on the policy as well.

Send the certificate and we will quote the renewal.

Your current policy number and the end date are enough to start. We will come back with the renewal figure, the excess, and what has changed since last year.
